Best Fabric for Indian Summer 2026 —
Mulmul, Kota Doria, or Chanderi?
We manufacture all three fabrics — mulmul, Kota Doria, and Chanderi — from our Sanganer factory. So this is not a general textile guide; it's what we tell buyers who ask us which one to stock for summer. The honest answer is: it depends on your customer's heat level and occasion. This guide explains exactly what each fabric does and doesn't do in Indian heat.
Short Answer — Which is Best for Indian Summer?
For Indian summer, mulmul cotton is the best fabric — it is the lightest, most breathable, and softest of the three. Kota Doria is an excellent second choice, equally breathable with a silk shimmer for occasions. Chanderi is suitable for mild summer heat and air-conditioned environments, but needs a lining when stitched as a suit, which reduces breathability. All three are far better than synthetic fabrics for temperatures above 35°C.
The Three Fabrics, Briefly Explained
Pure 92×80 grade muslin cotton. Fine open weave, featherweight, gets softer with every wash. No silk content — 100% cotton.
Best for extreme heatGI-tagged cotton-silk blend from Kota, Rajasthan. Square khat weave creates natural openings — sheer, silk shimmer, slightly structured.
Best for summer occasionsGI-tagged cotton-silk blend from Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh. Sheer, luminous — but heavier than mulmul or Kota Doria when lined.

Mulmul Cotton — The Summer Workhorse
There is a reason mulmul has been worn through Indian summers for centuries. It is not marketing — it is engineering. Pure muslin cotton at 92×80 thread count creates a fabric where the weave itself acts as a ventilation system. The fine yarns trap almost no heat. The loose structure lets air move through freely.
Most importantly, mulmul has an unusual property: it gets softer with each wash. After ten washes, a mulmul saree or suit material is noticeably more comfortable than when it was new. Your customers who buy mulmul keep coming back to buy more — not because their old pieces wore out, but because they want more of the same quality.
The one limitation is that mulmul doesn't have occasion prestige. It reads as casual and daily. A mulmul cotton saree for a wedding will look out of place — even if it is comfortable. For anything above casual or office wear, you need Kota Doria or Chanderi.

Kota Doria — The Occasion Summer Fabric
Kota Doria solves the problem that mulmul can't: being appropriate for occasions in Indian summer. The GI-tagged khat weave — where cotton warp and silk weft yarns interlock to create the distinctive square check pattern — produces a fabric that is simultaneously sheer, breathable, and visually sophisticated.
The silk content is what makes Kota Doria different from mulmul for summer occasions. It's not enough silk to add significant warmth (the khat weave structure keeps air flowing), but it's enough to add the subtle natural shimmer that elevates any garment from casual to semi-formal. A Kota Doria saree at a summer wedding is exactly right — comfortable, cool, visually appropriate.
One practical note from our factory: Kota Doria sarees need hand washing rather than machine washing, because the khat weave structure can lose its distinctive texture if machine-agitated regularly. This is worth mentioning to your customers — it's not a flaw, it's maintenance for a GI-certified heritage fabric.

Chanderi — An Honest Assessment for Summer
Chanderi is sometimes oversold as a summer fabric. The truth is more specific than that.
In saree form — where the fabric drapes freely without a lining — Chanderi is genuinely comfortable in moderate summer heat up to about 35°C. The sheer cotton-silk blend handles temperatures that would make a heavier fabric unbearable. For morning occasions, temple visits, and events in air-conditioned environments, a Chanderi saree is a perfectly comfortable summer choice.
The situation changes when Chanderi is stitched as a suit. Because it is quite sheer — even more so than Kota Doria — a Chanderi suit needs a lining on the top fabric. That lining reduces breathability considerably. A lined Chanderi suit in 40°C outdoor heat is not comfortable. The same Chanderi saree in the same weather is fine.
For boutique buyers: When selling Chanderi suits for summer, it is worth advising your customers to request a thin cotton lining (not a full interlining) from their tailor. A light cotton lining adds opacity without adding significant warmth.
Where Chanderi genuinely excels in summer is as a gifting fabric — weddings, festive occasions, premium purchases. The GI tag and the 700-year heritage of Chanderi weaving give it a story that mulmul and Kota Doria don't match for aspiration. For full details: Chanderi silk saree wholesale guide.
What South India Chooses — and Why
South India provides a useful data point for this comparison. Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh experience temperatures above 35°C for nine to ten months of the year. Comfort is not a seasonal preference — it is a year-round requirement. Watching what South Indian saree wearers actually choose over generations is a real-world test.
The answer from South India: mulmul cotton for daily wear, Kota Doria for occasions. Chanderi is worn for festive celebrations — Diwali, weddings — where the prestige matters more than the heat, or where events are held in the evening or indoors.
For our Sanganer factory, South India is consistently our largest domestic market for mulmul sarees. Teachers, government employees, and homemakers in Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, and Vijayawada represent a significant portion of our mulmul repeat orders. These are practical buyers choosing based on daily comfort, not fashion.
